Since I know you all care I need advice.
I have been training for the Boise Ironman for quite a while. I then decided I wasn't going to do it because of a knee injury and the cost. I took several weeks off to heal my knee and during those several weeks I figured the Ironman was out of the question because of the training I missed.
Well, two weeks ago my buddy Todd did the St George Ironman. It got me so pumped that I decided to give the old knee a try. These last few weeks of training I have felt great and I am still able to keep up with the training schedule even after several weeks off.
The thing that really sucks is the family will be in Lake Powell the very weekend of the race, so not only would I miss Powell, but I would be doing the Ironman with basically no support which is kind of demoralizing and it would suck to do an Ironman and hug strangers at the finish line.
I know none of you really care, but what should I do? I have woke up nearly every day at 5am for the last year and put in countless hours for this, but to do it coming of an injury and with no family there is kind of a bummer. Let a brother know what you think. Also, I think Boise would be a lot more fun than Lake Powell!
Mike

It's probably not what you want to hear, but I don't think you should do it. Your knee is going to be put through a lot and I don't think you've given it enough time even though it's still in a month. Unless you're prepared to fork out Ironman costs + knee surgery = no bueno.
ReplyDeletePlus, it's the only time of year you get to see me in a swimsuit for 5 straight days. And you can't put a price on that.
I am with Chelsey. Let your knee rest and do a different Iron Man. (or do the St. George in a year.) Not worth re-injuring your knee.

It's all a moot point because either way I can kick your a**....no amount of Ironmans will change that ever. Lake Powell 2010 baby!!!!
ReplyDeleteSeriously though...there are other Ironmans, let your knee heal and do the next one that comes up.
Wow. I was not expecting a bunch of Hell no's, but I do appreciate knowing where you all stand.
ReplyDeleteHey, we're not saying we don't think you can. We're simply saying knee-wise it's probably not the best.
ReplyDeleteI think I can speak for everyone when I say, we know you can do even with a bad knee and blindfolded. But you could do some serious irreversable damage to you knee.
Listen to Tara, she's basically a doctor.
Maybe John can give me a physical with that sweet mustache!
ReplyDeletedon't do it. come to lake powell. nothing better than that.. another round of american gladiators, speedos, family, the lake..need i say more? train for another year and then you'll kick butt in the next one..woot!
ReplyDeleteSorry Mike, my birthday wish was granted when John shaved that "broom" on his upper lip! P.S. Your encouraging words only made my wish harder to be granted. As he was shaving it he kept telling how much everyone liked it. Ya, Right!!!
ReplyDeleteSo the physical might have to happen without the stache! Sorry to disappoint.
The fact that you put in all of those hours and might not get to do it makes me so sad for you! But here is what I think you should do.
ReplyDeleteSkip it, come to Lake Powell, sign up for the next one and let us all know when and where it is. We will be there cheering you on and hugging you at the finish line!

ReplyDeleteI am contemplating growing the 'stache back. Tara has been asking for it to come back. I would do it if you are ready, I wish I was ready to do it.
ReplyDeleteUm...ok I know this is a little late but all I know is, whether you decide to or not, I sooo wish we could go to Lake Powell! No fair! Yall have fun!
